The thyroid gland (lat. Thyroid) is a spongelike organ in the lower part of the neck. It is a part of the endocrine gland system and it is considered one of the most vascular organs in the entire human body.

The gland is located in the lower third of the front part of the neck and, like a horseshoe, it covers the respiratory tube (the trachea). It is sometimes called the butterfly gland because its lobes resemble the shape of a butterfly. The lobes are connected by the tissue bypass or the isthmus which is located in the front of the trachea and below the larynx.

The thyroid gland is the main metabolic gland and that is why it is very important in the functioning of the whole body.

Increased functions carry the risk of occurrence of various diseases that can develop due to the accelerated functions of numerous organ systems.
